در بسیاری از کاربردهای صنعتی درایوها باید از نظر سرعت چرخش یا در حالت ایستاده نظارت شوند. در صنایع خودروسازی، مواد غذایی، فولاد و معدن، از سنسورهای سرعت برای تشخیص ایمن سکون، سرعت بیش از حد و کم‌سرعت درایوها یا شکستن تسمه در نوار نقاله استفاده می‌شود. در ماشین‌های متحرک مانند لیفتراک‌ها، سنسورهای سرعت به عنوان افزایش سرعت عمل می‌کنند.
سنسورهای سرعت تشخیص و نظارت بر سرعت چرخش را در یک واحد یکپارچه می کنند. سر حسگر با استفاده از اصول حسگر القایی یا مغناطیسی کار می کند. این سنسور سطوح فعال فلزی را در قسمت چرخان ماشین تشخیص می دهد. ارزیابی یکپارچه این اطلاعات را به سرعت چرخشی تبدیل می کند
